Better safe than sorry: the importance of the personal protective equipment.
The industrial fabric and the urban fabric coexist, they intertwine at close distance. In some cases, they are separated only by a few hectares of agricultural land. In some others the borders from one site to the other are rivers, ponds and stretches of coast.
If you tell a story, then everything changes.

The air quality in the city and in the factories, the presence of pollution, the necessity to prevent the spread of toxic substances in the air or the one of self-protecting from their eventual presence. How do face masks, gloves and air filters help survive in a contaminated environment? Hot and actual topics, doubts and questions to whom university research answers.
Professor of Forensic Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Hygiene and PUBLIC HEALTH.
Research field in reference to the short film: Personal protective equipment (air pollution).
Marcello Campagna teaches Forensic Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Hygiene and Public Health at the University of Cagliari. The references to the research are present in various moments of the everyday life of the main characters of the first episode, forced for health reasons to use various personal protection devices.

Monitoring the level of polluting, toxic and harmful substances present in the environment is an indispensable prevention activity for the protection of the human health.
The monitoring activity is also necessary to understand how these particles spread, which are their sizes and their chemical composition.
Among the anthropogenic factors that cause the spread of the so-called particulates, namely pollutants that are dispersed in the atmosphere, there are the emissions from industry, agricultural activities, incinerators and thermal power plants, but those emissions cause by traffic and air traffic. In this context, the occupational medicine plays a decisive role because, among its various tasks, one of the most important is represented by the determination of the tolerability levels, beyond which substances dispersed in the environment can cause serious damage to health.
The workers at industrial sites and the inhabitants of the centres adjacent to the sites are particularly exposed to those pollutants. Depending on the type and location, the subject mentioned (workers and citizens), may be exposed from time to time to highly toxic substances and, in some cases, even carcinogenic. Some substances are defined more specifically neurotoxic, because they are responsible for major damage to the nervous system. The monitoring systems are based mostly on the analysis of biological samples and their main purpose is to determine whether the levels of particulate matter dispersed in the air are tolerable or not.
